Wednesday Eve Tournament 7/02/08

Over the past few weeks, more five fish limits have been brought to the scales. This is a good thing as it verifies to me that the bass have made a really good comeback since the fish kills from hurricane Rita.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries had ruled our area a total fish kill and began a vigorous restocking program that has paid off along with the natural recovery provided by nature. The fish that survive usually have really strong genes and the numbers multiply faster because of no predation by other species because there aren’t very many to eat the eggs and small fish.

But this week was a little different at the Canal Bank weigh-in site. The average number of fish brought to the scales was down in numbers but the really good thing about it was the average weights were way up!<\/p>\r\n

First place finishers from the 29 boat field were the team of Clemson Buras and Brian Stephens with 3 bass that tipped the scales at 7.74. Their average weight was 2.58 per fish and that’s good in anybody’s book.

A 2 ½ pound average will win you plenty of money in most tournaments. And speaking of that, combined with the $43 they won for 2nd place bass (3.00) with the $375 for total weight and the payday was $418.

Todd Rabalais and Tony Landry used a plastic frog to entice 4 largemouths to the net that gave them a weight of 6.24 and 2nd place for $274.  Jacob & Jeff Mayer caught 3 weighers for a total of 6.04 and a $193 check for 3rd place. Their average weight was a little over 2 lbs.

Chuck Dufour and Jeff Bullion used a red shad worm to bring their 3 fish catch to the scales for a 5.70 total and also caught the big bass of the afternoon. (3.24) Their tally was $102 for big bass and $101 for 4th place total weight resulting in a nifty $203 for their efforts.

Gerald Cryer and E J Hildago also used a plastic frog and finished up the winners with 2 bass that weighed 5.20 for 5th place. Those two fish averaged 2.60 and had the highest average among all the top teams. They took home $71 for their efforts.

This week’s meal sponsors were Thomas Marine and Waterfront Properties and as usual the folks at Canal Bank were more than gracious hosts. Come join us next week no matter if you fish or not; the weigh-ins are enjoyed by all!
